“I can do ALL things”

Ever since I came to San Diego State and joined Pi Beta Phi, God has been tugging on my heart to reach the girls in the chapter and start a study. Right after I received my bid to join Pi Phi, I was unsure about my decision and began seriously thinking about dropping. Before I made that decision, I spoke and prayed with Matt- the head pastor at a local church. He shared with me the fact that as believers, we are not called to live in “christian bubbles” or only be surrounded by Christians at all times, but we are called to be in the world and reach non-believers in our everyday lives. He let me know that he had a strong feeling I was being called to my house – I knew right then and there I was indeed called. Between Fall 2007 (when I joined) and now, I had come up with every excuse in the book for not starting an in-house bible study, became complacent with where things were and with not reaching out to the ladies in my house.

Finally, over the summer of 2009, God worked on me and my heart in so many different ways. After meeting with our Greek IV staff, Kristina, at the end of the Spring 2009 semester, I joined Greek IV leadership and began to embark on the journey that God had called me to two years earlier. I spent the summer praying for courage and boldness and seeking wise counsel from my family. When fall came around the butterflies in my stomach began to multiply, but so did God’s faithfulness. I have seen God work in so many tangible ways during my college experience, but this fall He has shown himself to me in powerful ways.

Every semester, I ask the Lord to show me a verse that I can call my “semester verse” that I will apply to that semester. As I started praying about that, the scripture that came to mind was Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” I started to think that it was such a prevalent verse and didn’t have the depth that I wanted, but the more I thought about it the more I realized that that scripture was about as deep as it gets- I can do ALL things. After that, God confirmed this verse to me in two ways- through my boyfriend Josh who suggested that I meditate on that verse, and through Kristina who brought it up at our first Greek IV leader meeting… He is so good! He showed me the depth and meaning of this verse and its application to my life this semester.

Every time I let those thoughts of fear and disbelief about my starting my study in Pi Phi, I was reminded of that verse. I finally took the plunge at our first meeting of the semester. I asked just about everyone that I could for prayer that day- I needed it, I was so nervous! I stood up at our meeting, and announced to the sorority chapter that I would be starting a faith group- a safe, non-judgmental place to come, ask questions, create meaningful relationships and explore who God is in our everyday lives as Greeks.

My biggest fear was that after I passed around a sign up sheet that I would receive it back blank. Ten names were on it when I got it back!! All I could think was, “God, you are so faithful.” That next night, five young women came to my study and we had an amazing time of sharing together about their hopes for the study and how we could invite other chapter members to join. I know that God is going to use this in the Pi Phi house and the lives of its members, and I am continually praying for His guidance to be ever-present in my life as I lead these young women.

A House Renewed at Greek Conference

Cam brought 31 ΑΤΩ’s to GC. Six of them became Christians. Many more made other decisions for Christ. One of those six, was the guy that nobody expected to take faith seriously… he was THE “frat guy”. Following conference this guy, Robbie, said to his entire house at their chapter meeting, “I found God this weekend, please help me change my life”. Robbie is now coming to Greek IV consitantly and growing in his faith.

This fraternity, Robbie, and the others… will never be the same again.

Delta Tau Delta Renewed

Two years ago there was no one living out their faith actively in Delta Tau Delta (Delts) at Purdue University. When Payton Miller first came to a Greek IV House Ministry Leader (HML) retreat as a junior, he mentioned how there was no one living out their faith in their house… let alone a Bible Study going on and initially thought the idea of one sounded crazy. However, God seemed to have had a different idea. A fellow HML approached Payton because she thought it would be great for there to be a joint Bible study between them one week, because their houses were “Football Buddies”. Payton went along with the idea, and was stunned at the response of his fraternity brothers. There were a handful of guys who thought it was great idea, and after that first one, Payton just kept leading Bible studies… and pouring himself into sharing his faith and life with his Delt Brothers. Today, 4 of Payton’s good friends in the fraternity have made decisions to follow Jesus Christ, are active in the Greek IV and Christian community, their lives are transforming, and they are excited to continue the work in Delts that God has started through Payton. Along with those 4 brothers of his, the full impact that he has had on the house as a whole has reproductions for God’s Kingdom that we will never fully be able to grasp completely.

Payton has spent his senior year as President of our Greek IV student leadership team, and will be joining staff to plant a Greek IV chapter on a campus that currently does not have one, taking his experience of how God used him at Purdue and in his house along with him.

However, Payton will be graduating this year. So what is next for Delts? Along with those 4 that we have literally seen God transform, Payton has encouraged and motivated a freshmen, Carl, to slowly take the mantle of leadership for next year, thus securing active ministry in Delts for generations to come. Carl… is pumped about what God has done in Delts thus far, and is eager to join the process of calling his fraternity brothers to Christ!
