I started going to Greek IV with some friends during my sophomore year; but the real transformation did not start until I began considering the Chapter President role in my Fraternity. I spoke with our chapter advisor, Dusty Harrison, about the pros and cons of this decision, and eventually committed. During my year as Chapter President, Dusty and I met weekly to discuss what was going on in my life. We spent time talking about struggles and challenges in the chapter, situations in my personal life, as well as my growing relationship with God. These talks with Dusty, along with weekly Greek IV events, and frequent fellowship dinners with friends from Greek IV helped me see the amount of love that Jesus has for each one of us.

During the Spring semester, I was encouraged to go to a Greek Conference in Charlotte. This weekend was so powerful for me personally. Things in life were starting to make sense and I was starting to understand that we are not in control, but that by putting trust and faith in God’s grace we will feel His love. It was such an amazing event to get together with other Greeks and worship the Lord. I saw that If we keep our hearts open, God will do wonderful work inside us. I pray that students that are open and seeking the love of Jesus can have similar opportunities to mine in my years at Clemson.

This past summer my brother, who had just finished his freshman year at Clemson and in my fraternity, suffered a fatal wakeboarding accident. This has easily been the toughest thing I have ever had to face and I pray that others do not have to, but I have found a great deal of peace in knowing that God has a plan for us all. My brother’s gifts are still evident on earth. I thank God for blessing us with 19 wonderful years with such a wonderful person. We will never know the whole plan that is ahead of us, but I am so thankful for the opportunities that God has placed in front of me. Without the understanding and life altering events that Dusty and Greek IV helped provide, I could very easily be super frustrated and rebellious against God. Instead, I know God has his hand on me and I trust that he will raise us up in the end.

As the last school year was winding down and our new leadership team was getting geared up, we realized there would be a handful of our core group here in Clemson over the summer. I put the idea on the table of having a weekly dinner at my house for whoever could come, as a way to build intimacy and friendships as well as start some new ones. When our leadership team went to Rockbridge for an Intervarsity camp, two staff members gave each of us a book called The Pursuit of God in the Company of Friends by Rich Lamb and encouraged us to read it together over the summer. The idea was manifested as dinner and hang out time every Wednesday night in my home.

The first weeks were comprised of just students who had been attending Greek IV and there was time for relationships to build on something deeper than a just a Tuesday night Large Group meeting. As the weeks went on, new faces began to show up as we each wanted to invite our friends who may or may not be willing to make the step of coming to a meeting during the year. The fact of the matter was that when you experience a community like the one we have been building, you want others to come experience it too, and that’s what happened this summer.

Friends who had never come to a Large Group meeting or to their house bible study came and enjoyed the company of a group of friends dedicated to the pursuit of God. Whether we all realized it then or not, many of the values of community that a few of us had been reading in the book had never found a better place for application. I learned more and more as the summer went on about how to create space for God to work through hospitality. Offering for someone to come into your home, enjoy a meal that they did not have to worry about paying for, and spend time with people who cared to meet and get to know them was such an impactful experience that generally if you came once, you’d want to keep coming. It caused people to want to know why this group was getting together, which opened the door for an explanation about our ministry and what we are about. These summer hang outs were whetting the appetites of our friends to come be a part of us, to share in our vision, and to get involved with this ministry.

The most beautiful part is that this was not because of anything we did or planned, but because a community of believers pursuing Christ together is something so foreign, contagious, and desirable that it drew people in through Him. He moved in hearts and relationships, built up community, and prepared for Himself hands that He wants to use. All this has led to momentum going into the busy school year instead of coming off of a summer lull, which has all of us that were involved very excited.

When I first met Christine, it was in a nice air-conditioned Starbucks on a hot summer day after her freshman year. I had heard of Christine through my staff partner, Emery, as she Christine had an incredibly transformational experience at Greek Conference. We chatted as she was taking care of a child for a program for the summer, and thought to myself that this was a down-to-earth woman who had seen a lot already as a young woman, yet was privileged to have the clear work of God’s healing in her life.

Christine started a house ministry in Alpha Phi the next year, and shortly after became our largest sorority ministry. Her leadership led to the fast growth, and by the end of the year, Alpha Phi had become a strong sorority ministry.

The next summer, Christine and I would not be in much air conditioning as I would spend a summer with her in Cairo serving among the poor. A moment that is frozen in time in my head was when we served an elderly widow who had been rejected by her family, lost everything to robbers, and had no one but God to provide for her. As Christine and I were both moved by her faith in Jesus, as she would be so thankful to have her needs met every day, We walked out together and tears were in our eyes and we realized that we had deeply experienced the presence of God.

Christine would continue to see God’s power realized around her as she faithfully prayed and witnessed to one of her closest sisters in the sorority who was clearly far from God. At Greek Conference, she and I and two other student leaders prayed together for this woman who was clearly wrestling with God. As we prayed, the tears flowed from our eyes as the Holy Spirit was revealing to us the depth of her pain and we prayed that God would deliver her.

Christine’s sorority sister became a Christian that day, a true miracle as we saw God’s saving power on display for us to see firsthand.

It was natural that Christine would become president of Greek IV her senior year – the selection team was unanimous in that decision. As we worked together, the potential that so many had seen became realized in full. My favorite moments as a staff are when I see students leading and I can step into the background and celebrate them becoming the disciples and leaders Jesus calls them to be. Christine was leading and discipling women, as well as bringing a new emphasis on prayer to the Greek ministry at NU. Her presence will not be easily forgotten.

Christine and I were sitting reflecting on our friendship over the years, and she said to me, “Andy, you believed in me when I didn’t even believe in myself.” As tears welled in my eyes as I reflected on her words, I paused and how much greater God is to have believed in us when were weren’t worth believing in because of the sin that kept us from him and continues to destroy our world.

The privilege of ministry to students is walking alongside them as they become what they never dreamed they could be, believing in them as God believes that broken people can be healed to change the world. Would you pray for more students to believe and walk in obedience the path of following Jesus?

27 Purdue University Fraternity and Sorority Students made decisions for Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior at this years Greek Conference... Praise God... but what's next?

27 Purdue University Fraternity and Sorority Students made decisions for Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior at this years Greek Conference. The excitement that was produced as a result is probably obvious. But what is perhaps less obvious, is the difficult task of follow-up and what that means for campus work post-Conference. The weeks following conference were crucial weeks for students to get plugged in after making decisions.

Thankfully, we were able to meet with the 27. Now we have five guys plugged into an Inter-Fraternity Bible study that I am leading, and our student leaders are leading their own brothers and sisters in discipleship and GIGs. From this, we are hoping to see their faith deepen, and hopefully even more ministries take root as a result!
