Sarah is a student that started coming around to our weekly meetings the fall of last year. In the spring of last year, I started meeting with her and one of her other friends that was not walking with Jesus for a GIG. The transformation I have seen in Sarah’s life over the past year has blown me away! At the beginning of this fall semester during rush, Sarah stood up and shared her testimony in front of over 100 women! She then started an investigative bible study in her sorority, Alpha Delta Pi- where between 15 and 20 women have been coming each week! Here is Sarah’s story of the transformation in her life over the past year:

“My freshman year of college was full of new friends, parties, and late night food. And don’t get me wrong, it was a blast. But I knew something was missing, and God knew it too. He began to pursue my heart and Greek IV fell right into my lap. Krystal reached out to me and gave me the encouragement I needed to get plugged in and to get involved. This organization, through God, has literally changed my life and heart around. I have never experienced the kind of community I have with those people.

Greek IV has given me opportunities to lead, to talk about Christ with my sorority sisters, and even to do mission work in Haiti. I have learned what it means to walk with Christ, even amongst the craziness of college life- and I cannot express how much joy it has given me.

And the only thing better than the incredible peace that has entered my own heart, is seeing it enter in others. My sorority sisters have been so eager each week to come to Bible Study-another outlet of Greek Impact. I could think of nothing better for my college experience than exploring God’s truth with my best friends. Greek IV, for me, has been the most tangible evidence of God’s incredible love.”

My phone rings at 6:30 on a Friday evening. I should be enjoying the weekend- out to dinner with friends or hanging out with my roommates; but this particular evening I was recovering from the flu and all I could think about was finishing work for the day so I could lounge in bed and watch a good movie.

I look at the caller I.D. half expecting my friend Taylor to tell me about some crazy detail of her day. I’m surprised when I see *Andrew’s name on my phone. Andrew is a junior at UNC and just started becoming involved in our ministry this past fall. It is not a typical occurrence for Andrew to call me, but I didn’t answer because it was a Friday night- I was off work, and not feeling great. After I ignored the call, however, I had a feeling that God was up to something… So I called Andrew back. 2 hours, a couple slices of pizza and a cup of coffee later, Andrew and I have decided on some first steps in bringing house ministry into his fraternity.

During our meeting that evening, Andrew revealed a real brokenness for his fraternity brothers that do not know Jesus. He had especially been burdened for a couple of his brothers that came to college as Christians, but have since left the faith- and speak pretty abusively against it. Unfortunately, this is a somewhat common occurence at the University of North Carolina. After attending Greek Conference the weekend beforehand, Andrew had been thinking about what it would be like to start some sort of Bible study in his fraternity. Excited at first, Andrew was quickly discouraged by the response of a few of his fraternity brothers- who basically laughed and mocked his idea.

We talked about how Jesus had people walk away from him as he taught (John 6:66-71). But while he lost some who were not willing to follow him, he gained the disciples that were serious and let him transform their lives. We talked about what it would mean for Andrew to persevere in bringing Christ to his fraternity- that even if some men give him a hard time, others may have things stirring in their hearts and just need someone to bring the gospel to them. In 2 Corinthians 2 Paul says that we are the “aroma of Christ to those who are being saved and those who are perishing.” That night, Andrew decided that he wants to be the aroma of Christ to the men in his fraternity. He will spend the rest of the semester talking to guys and gauging where their hunger is and what topics will appeal to them to start ministry in their fraternity house on campus.

*name has been changed
